SSPI member Christophe Bauer of SpaceX sent me this photo of the Falcon 9 launcher rolling out to the launch pad in preparation for its late March or early April 2010 launch. The whole industry is watching this entrepreneurial drive into spaceflight.

Wishing Nicole Stott a Prosperous Voyage |

Last year, SSPI invited Christopher Stott, CEO of Mansat, to its Board of Directors. Mansat is the organization that, under the name SpaceIsle, has successfully branded the Isle of Man as a financial center for the satellite and space industry.
Chris is a passionate advocate for the space business and particularly for satellite and space education. When I first got to know him, I assumed that he was based on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. But no, he lives in Houston, Texas. Why? Let’s just say it’s personal.
It turns out that his wife, Flight Engineer Nicole Stott, is a NASA astronaut who, on August 25, rockets skyward aboard mission STS-128 of the Space Shuttle. The mission delivers more components to the International Space Station, and also rotates crew on the Station. When the Shuttle Discovery un-docks from the Station at the end of the Mission, Nicole Stott will be staying behind until STS-129 departs the Kennedy Space Center for low Earth orbit.
You can learn more about the STS-128 mission and about Ms. Stott in the Latest News section of our site. I wish her a prosperous voyage and thank Chris for lending his spouse to the effort to build humanity’s future in space.

Welcome to the new SSPI Web site |

Welcome to SSPI’s new Web site, which was launched during summer 2009. We moved to this new platform in order to provide our members in some 30 nations with the ability to connect, interact and share online from anywhere at any time with anyone in the membership.
What can you do at www.sspi.org now that you couldn’t do before?
- You can set up a Profile Page that includes contact information, a brief bio and your photo. This becomes your “public face” within the Society. To build your profile, you can add photos, files and links, and start your own blog to share your views and experiences with others.
- What others? Using the Web site, you can establish Connections with other SSPI members, so you can learn what they are doing and keep them up-to-date on your activities. In addition to the automatic news feeds from your colleagues, you can send and receive private messages with your Connections as well. You can also join Groups, from your local chapter to online groups devoted to particular topics and interests.
- If this all sounds like FaceBook or LinkedIn, that’s the whole idea. But it is not a closed network. By selecting My Networks, you can add links from your SSPI Profile to your presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, Plaxo and other social networks. That makes it easy for your colleagues to find you wherever you like to hang out.
But some good things haven’t changed. Logging in to the site gives you access to information on member discounts at industry events. You can find out what Chapters are up to through the Event Calendar and Chapter pages. You can read the latest issue of The Orbiter, check out podcast interviews with industry leaders, search for an educational program, and access our Career Center.
Welcome to our Web site. I hope you will make yourself at home.
