—David Bross, SSPI Vice President of Chapters
The success and value of SSPI, as with any organization, derives from the strength of its local chapters. There are no limits to the activities and events that local chapters can sponsor on behalf of their members. This article explores four activities that have been successful for SSPI chapters:
As an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, the board of directors of SSPI encourages its chapters to provide a robust bouquet of programs and social events designed to help local chapter members foster increased industry ties and education, while raising money to endow undergraduate and graduate student scholarships for those currently studying to enter the commercial satellite business.
Volunteers run local chapters. And it is through the multiple talents of our members that creative, fun and important programs are fostered and maintained at the local level. Examples of the types of programs offered are:
Regular Monthly Evening Meetings
The event most often held by local chapters is the monthly evening membership meeting. The most successful meetings have incorporated a formal program (either single speaker or panel session: moderator and panelists) to discuss a topical issue of the day. Prior to the formal program, chapter officers can conduct business and make announcements to the gathered members. A small fee is charged at the door ($10 for members, perhaps $15 for non-members) in order to build up the chapter’s philanthropy fund. Many chapters solicit a corporate sponsor to serve as the host of the local event and to provide light refreshments before and after the formal program. This is a great way to meet and network with satellite professionals in your local area.
Regular Monthly Brown Bag Luncheons
Another way to serve the needs of your local member could come in the form of monthly or bi-monthly or quarterly Brown Bag Luncheons. These sessions could be run in the same way as the evening programs (see above) and are a great way to offer members additional opportunities to meet other chapter members during the day and to learn about issues of the day. Corporate sponsorship for these events also is encouraged.
SSPI members certainly like to socialize. Local chapters often sponsor social outings (trips to ballgames, holiday parties with raffles, evenings at trendy nightspots, ice cream socials) in order to provide the maximum opportunity for networking.
The Annual SSPI Gala
Local chapters often elect to purchase a table at the annual SSPI Gala that is held in conjunction with the PBI Media, LLC Satellite Show. Members may purchase individual tickets or chapters may elect to purchase a Chapter Table with selected seats provided to special members in the chapter or raffled.
